Before/after

First, some background. I’ve had the idea for a few months to introduce some more interesting categories to my thoughtbook (see top of this page). I’ve been writing about quite a diverse range of things, and everyone might not be interested in reading all of that. Therefore I also wanted some more RSS feeds, preferrably one for each category. (The plugin WP More Feeds sorts that, but more on the Wordpress plugins I can’t live without in a later post.)

Here’s where I ran into a tiny problem. The headers — that is, the BIG colourful ones — have previously been static images, using a pretty font the name of which I can’t remember, because at some point in February my trusted laptop dies miserably, and with it went all the fonts I had downloaded. New categories meant a need for new page titles, so my first idea was to find the old font or one that looked like it and then let something like sIFR or FLIR render the headers.

Blisomfolk och lite ventilera

by Erika on Friday 3 April 2009, 00:55 | Comments

I am a free blogger

by Erika on Wednesday 1 April 2009, 21:59 | Comments

Free bloggerI am a free blogger. I also support all other free bloggers out there, and I want free speech to remain free, “AFK” as well as online. Just thought you should know.

And, if you also want blogging to remain free, please consider sending a picture of yourself with the words “Free blogger” to join the thousands at http://www.beppegrillo.it/iniziative/freeblogger/. Or have a look at http://www.boingboing.net/2009/03/11/italian-bloggers-cal.html. The Web is, it seems, under more of a threat than ever.

by Erika on Sunday 15 March 2009, 19:30 | Comments (1)

I just corrected the most stupid coding error I have ever been completely unaware of making. Only yesterday was I made aware that it has been impossible to post comments to my blog. I just thought that nobody wanted to comment. How was I to know?

It’s Bluefish from now on

by Erika on Monday 9 March 2009, 20:27 | Comments

Allright, world, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for having first learnt how to use a computer on a Windows 3.11 machine. I’m sorry for thus having got used to coding, first in Notepad, then in Dreamweaver (never even touched the WYSIWYG features, I only used it as a fancy syntax highlighter, so sue me), before I even came close to learning to use Linux and good editors and web standards and godknowswhat at the age of sixteen. Five years of my life wasted, I know, I know. But to the point, even being a horrible horrible semi-wannabe-half-geek, I would have thought that simple commands such as Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V were sort of standard in GUI applications. I know that things don’t work that way at the command line, but it’s not the XFCE terminal I’m angry at right now but ViM. Stupid, stupid, stupid and still oh so annoyingly competent ViM.

The Very Extraordinary Thing About Mathematics

by Erika on Monday 29 September 2008, 12:19 | Comments

Some random reflections in the wake of an extraordinarily good day. (This was written on Friday.)

I know what I like about Maths, what I like about programming and what I like about reading whodunnits. This is not a new discovery, but it’s been made particularly clear to me this week. It’s the riddles, the curious problems, the casse-têtes that keep cropping up, that fascinate me. Because whenever I manage to solve one of them, I am the king of the world (disregarding gender implications for the moment).
